Chocolate. Life is like a box of them, right? Not always.
There have been times in my life where I’ve been really, really “good.” I mean, I’ve managed to stay off chocolate, and even all sugar for over a year. Cold turkey. But the last few months haven’t been one of those times. I blame it all on my husband. He has a terrible sweet tooth. He knows dark chocolate is my weakness. He likes to find new treats and bring them home just to see the look on my face.
So with my apologies to all those diabetics out there, here is a list of my latest indulgences.
1. Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Nuggets with Almonds
It all started with these. I had been good for weeks. Then, in a Pulitzer Prize winning fit of rationalization and self-deceit, I asked for Dark Chocolate Nuggets. Only a therapist could tell you why. But Hubby knew I had let down my guard and took advantage. The next day, there were two bags of those wicked morsels sitting on my kitchen counter. When I unwrapped that golden foil and took that first bite of dark, sweet lusciousness, I knew I was doomed.
2. Sam’s Club’s chocolate chip muffins
Then hubby discovered these at Sam’s Club and couldn’t resist bringing them home. And of course, after a hard day at the keyboard, I couldn’t resist eating one. Or two. No, I don’t do two. Not at the same time, at least.
We like to pop them into the microwave for about a minute before eating. Careful, they’re hot. But all that melted gooey richness inside, surrounded by moist chocolate cake takes me back to my mother’s kitchen. Can you say “sugar rush”?
3. QT brownies
I never should have let him get the gas alone. On a routine fill up, Hubby scoured out the best treats in the convenience store. These, also remind me of the stuff my mother used to bake. And they really help me get going again when I’m stuck in my manuscript, so I need them. Right?
I think I need to hire a personal trainer.
4. Blue Bell Nutty Chocolate ice cream
Did you know July is National Ice Cream Month? Blue Bell Creameries introduced this brand a few years ago for that occasion. Yum, yum. What’s in it? I only need to quote from their website “a rich chocolate ice cream loaded with milk chocolate coated pecans, dark chocolate coated peanuts, white chocolate coated almonds and roasted walnuts.” Oh, yeah.
I really need to make a steady date with my recumbent bike.
5. Abbott Dark Zone Perfect bars
To compensate at least a little on the side of healthier eating, I found these delicious bars. They have 12 grams of protein each plus 19 essential vitamins and minerals. My favorite flavors are Double Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate Almond and Dark Chocolate Mocha.
A quote from their website by Dr. Rosemary Riley, Ph.D., LD, Nutrition Scientist for Abbott Nutrition: “Eating chocolate simply makes us feel good—just thinking about chocolate can evoke pleasurable emotions and memories. With ZonePerfect Dark Chocolate Nutrition Bars, you now don’t have to choose between what you enjoy and what is good for you.”
Works for me. You can order Dark Zone Perfect bars by the case from bodybuilding.com (yes, I see the irony there). Now where did I put my free weights?
And just in case you need more rationalization, from Hershey’s website:
“Like many other plant-based foods, cocoa and chocolate have many natural occurring ‘good for you’ components. Much of the current research has focused on compounds called ‘flavanols’ which occur naturally in cacao. Flavanols also act as antioxidants which can have beneficial effects on the body. Antioxidants are compounds that help neutralize free radicals and protect your body against their destructive effects.”
Hey, it’s good for me. So I can eat all I want, right?
The bottom line of all this sweetness is that writers need chocolate. So do readers.
So what’s your favorite? Are you a dark chocolate lover? Or hater? Is milk chocolate your vice? How about white chocolate? Or are you a chocolate hater altogether? (Believe it or not, there are some of those.)
Tell me your deep, darkest chocolate desires.

Good morning Linsey,
Chocolate, in almost any form, is my dear, sweet friend. (g) Actually, it’s my enemy in trying to lose weight, but….
I don’t love white chocolate …take it only in very small amounts, but dark or milk chocolate…well, that’s something else.
Love how you justified it with “good” stuff it contains. I almost don’t feel guilty.
My absolute favorite way to indulge is turtles. nuts, chocolate and caramel. (sigh)
Thanks for a funny read, you started my day at the computer with a smile.
Sandy
Thanks, Sandy. Glad to be of service. I like white chocolate, though not as much as dark. But milk chocolate is last on my list. Go figure. (Sorry. Bad term to use there – my scale just won’t go down, either.)
Oh, turtles. I used to binge on those when I was a kid. Hubby did find some dark chocolate ones once. I’ll have to ask him to hunt for them again.
Linsey,
I love dark chocolate and white chocolate. The treats you featured in your post were all unknown to me but the first one, Hershey’s Nugget Special Dark, looks appealing. I’m going to put it on my list. I don’t like chocolate cake or brownies or chocolate ice cream, just chocolate candy or chocolate icing.
But I love that quote about chocolate being good for you. I’ve always heard that too, especially about dark chocolate.
Have you heard about the Chocolate Milk Diet? I just read about it and it involves drinking three glasses of chocolate milk a day. I am trying that.
And a word of advice, don’t get a personal trainer. I did and hated it.I’d rather eat a chocolate bar.
Marilyn
Oh man! Chocolate is my WEAKNESS! My kryptonite…grin…
I LOVE chocolate. I had to tell my husband to quit buying me the chocolate hearts for Valentine’s Day (or to just buy the small ones) because I could eat the whole thing before midnight (no matter what time he gave it to me). I usually do pretty good ignoring the checkout lines at the grocery store but if a store has those little buckets of truffles sitting on the counter…. Oh man!
Favorites? Like I said above, truffles. Any kind of truffles… And white chocolate Reese’s. Oh, and those banana flavored Reese’s that they came out with in honor of Elvis Presley’s b-day. I really wish I could find more of those.
Okay, headed to find me some chocolate! Thanks for a fun post. This was great!
Tami :!:
Chocolate! Yum! I am going to have to adjust my insulin intake just from reading this post, LOL! Seriously, I love dark chocolate, but I also love brownies and chocolate ice cream. Fortunately I wear a pump and so when I do indulge, I can take the insulin for it. Now, I wonder how much insulin I need to match this post?
Linsey,
Breakfast was just long-ago enough to decide a break is in order – chocolate break today!
Love dark chocolate, but I’d rather have the reg. chocolate Milky Way (it’s the filling.)
I do love chocolate, but it’s not #1 on my list of sweets. Probably #2 which is close enough!
You made me laugh and made my mouth water! Have a good day.
Salivating and wondering if 7 am (westcoast) is too early to start, but hey, there’s a country song about drinking that says “it’s 12 o’clock sumwhere!”
AND.. today is a holiday (CANADA DAY) and that requires celebration so I am drinking chocolate milk, maybe a handful of dark chocolate chips with my cereal!
And on Sunday, we’ll walk across the border to celebrate July 4th (and hubby’s bd) with our US friends and then I’ll get my giant dark chocolate HERSHEY bar. We don’t have those biggies here and I love to keep one in the freezer for late night emergencies – just a little hit with the butt-end of the knife and there are slivers of delight!
Mostly, I’ve been living without chocolate for months because my favorite indulgence is a Lindt truffle after a meal and I’m trying to lose weight, not put it on! (17.5 lbs off so far. gg) Milk or white chocolate for me. If the world only contained dark chocolate, the rest of you ladies could have it all.
Linsey, So glad you like our Dark Chocolate bars!
In appreciation for your call-out, we made a discount code for you and your readers! Just enter ‘ZPBLOGJL1′ at checkout in our store (http://www.abbottstore.com) for 25% off ZonePerfect bars (Legalese: Expires 7/15, 1 use per e-mail address, e-mail zoneperfectcustomercare@abbott.com if you have any problems).
Enjoy your chocolate fix (or fixes)!
Okay, don’t shoot me, but if given a choice between chocolate cake and blueberry pie…um, I choose the pastry.
Don’t get me wrong, I would never, ever push aside a chocolate bar. It’s just that I prefer creme brulee, or strawberry shortcake.
That’s just me!
Now, the Sam’s club chocolate muffins…UM, YUMMY!!!!
And I love, love, love, double stuff Oreos (half chocolate)
So i suppose I’m still part chocoholic…so I can’t be totally shunned from the choco-lovers club, can I?
You’ve made me hungry with a truly decadent post.
Have a great evening,
Tamara
Dove Dark Chocolate. Yum! Deliciously divine!
LindaC
Hi Marilyn. Oh yes. The Hershey’s nuggets are the best. I like that Chocolate Milk diet. I’ll have to check that out.
You sound like my husband, Tami. Though neither of us can eat too much at one time. I get dizzy and queazy if I eat too much sugar and the caffeine in the chocolate raises my blood pressure.
White chocolate Reese’s? Hmmm.
Good to hear about your pump, Debbie. I thought about you when I wrote it and hoped it didn’t give you any problems. My conscience is eased.
Hi Maxine. So many dark chocolate lovers among us. I wonder if there’s a correlation with writing? I like the inside of Milky Ways, too. Once upon a time, they had dark chocolate Milky Ways. I’ll have to see if hubby can find some.
Hi Kathy. Yes, you’re right. Anytime’s a good time for chocolate. Although if my hubby eats it too late, it keeps him up. Oooh, that frozen Hershey bar sounds delish.
Ah, Carol, I knew we’d have at least one discenter in the group. Scratch that comment above about writing and dark chocolate. Congratulations on your weight loss! Don’t let my post stand in your way. My next one should be about my adventures on that recumbent bike.
Hi Tamara. No, you’re enough of a chocolate lover to be one of us. I love the creamy stuff too. ESPECIALLY creme brulee. Yet another topic for a post.
Thanks for everyone’s comments.
Here’s to ten more pounds by the end of the year. Your guess whether that’s on or off, LOL.
Mean! Mean! Mean! Yes you are a meanie!
Grrrrrrrr Now I’m in trouble. I’ve been sooooo good lately, but I might have to stop off at the store for some badness on the way home…. If I Do,it is ALL YOUR FAULT!
Oh, by the way… white chocolate is my all time favorite… now, realize there is a HUGE difference in the cheap white colored sugar stuff they pass off to you during Easter. The really good stuff is super creamy and has just as many subtle flavors as your good dark and milk chocolates. The white Toblerones are awesome!
After that, my favorite chocs are anything with Caramel in them.
Hehehe. Really, Pam. I’m not trying to be mean. Just sharing the joy, LOL. I know you’ve been good for a looong time. But we’ll both be good in the future, right? In the meantime… white Toblerones. Haven’t had those in a while. Yum.
I love Hershey’s kisses. I can eat five pounds at a time. Don’t keep them at my house for that reason.
Devoted chocoholic here. I do prefer dark chocolate and am getting to the point of being a chocolate snob–dove, Lindt, lindor, Godiva. Yep, I need help.
I nearly missed this post and the Zone Perfect coupon…which I am certainly going to take advantage of right now!
I love chocolate, but can OD on it and not eat chocolate for months at a time. During my second pregnancy, the only thing I could keep down was chocolate…the entire pregnancy. Wonder why middle son loves chocolate so much? He neve had a chance!
Off to eat just ONE piece…
Anna
Another reason I like Pamela Reader, she likes white chocolate. Deb, Russell Stover has Sugar Free Dark Chocolate bars. How nice of Zone Perfect to offer the coupon. Thanks again for the post.
Wow, Anna. Thanks for stopping by. I’m thrilled to have caught your attention. Thanks so much for the discount. I’m sure a lot of us will use it.
Please stop by again, and tell everyone at Abbott who loves romance and reading to visit us any time. Please keep making those delicious bars. I love them!
Hi Susan. Five pounds of anything sweet would put me in a coma, I think. But I used to be addicted to Hershey’s kisses at one time, too. They’re good.
Snobbery is good when it comes to chocolate, Sally. Why not go for the best? I like the Godiva cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory, myself.
Funny story about your pregnancy, Anna. No matter how upset my stomach might get at times, I can always manage to get down some chocolate. I have to force my sabbaticals. They don’t come naturally.
Hi again, Marilyn. Yes, wasn’t that coupon wonderful. Tell everyone you know.
Dark chocolate is the only kind I eat. There are dark chocolate Milky Ways and Three Musketeers and now Reese’s. As for ice cream, besides Dove bars, there’s Extreme Moose Tracks. And for Christmas or my birthday, my husband orders an entire box of Fannie Mae vanilla butter creams with dark choclate. Heaven.
