Nashville, Tennessee with author Trish Milburn

Welcome to Nashville, Tennessee!

With author, Trish Milburn (aka Tricia Mills)

Trish writes contemporary romance for Harlequin Americanunder her own name and young adult novels for Razorbill under the name Tricia Mills. She’s a charter member of Music City Romance Writers in Nashville, Tenn., and currently serves on the RWA Board of Directors as one of two Region 3 Directors.

Why Nashville?

Live here

Nashville is friendly with lots to do, even if you’re not a country music fan. Second Avenue downtown is filled with clubs. There are several urban and state parks in the area. One of the prettiest is Radnor Lake State Park, known as “Nashville’s Walden.” There are many historic homes, a great art gallery at the First Center, and several professional sports teams.

Hot local topic

This year, Nashville was hit with the worst flooding in its history, causing more than $1.5 billion worth of damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure and the loss of several lives. It caused tremendous damage to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, unfortunately less than three months before RWA was supposed to have our conference there. We were forced to move to Orlando, Florida. The good that hascome out of the flooding, however, is a tremendous volunteer spirit and outpouring of caring – neighbors helping neighbors, citizens helping strangers, record numbers of people signing up for volunteer organizations. We’re not called the Volunteer State for nothing.

On a happier note, Nashville is, of course, known for country music. One of our biggest events is the CMA Music Festival each summer where the country stars come out in force and perform concerts all over downtown and at LP Field (where our NFL team, the Tennessee Titans, play).

What is the city known for?

The Parthenonwhich is a full-scale model of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. It was built in 1897 for the state’s Centennial Celebration and stands in the middle of Centennial Park, across from Vanderbilt University. Inside is an art gallery and a full-scale replica of a statue of Athena.

Famous people

The Allman Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Bettie Page, Annie Potts, Reese Witherspoon

Ethnic communities

Nashville has a large Latino community, as many American cities do now. One of the interesting ethnic notes is that we have a large Kurdish population here. Nashville was one of the American polling places for Iraqi citizens living in the U.S. during Iraq’s elections. There’s a fair size Laotian population, plus many other ethnic groups. Many ethnic restaurants and stores can be found along Nolensville Road.

One must see, can’t miss thing you would recommend to someone new to the city

One of my favorite places is The Hermitage, the home of President Andrew Jackson. It includes their home, the grounds of their plantation, and the gravesites of President Jackson and his wife, Rachel.

Hi Trish
Thanks for sharing your Nashville with us. I’ve been there and loved the city. Of course, we went to the Grand Ole Opry.

I was so looking for ward to Nationals there, but, (sigh), maybe another time.

Trish,

I didn’t know you lived in Nashville. I love your picture. Thanks for blogging with us. Now that we have this post people can refer to it for a long time to come when they want to visit Nashville.

I’ve never been there but my daughter has a friend who lives there and loves it.

I would like to see the Parthenon and The Hermitage.

It sounds like a wonderful place.

Thank you again for sharing your city. Maybe Nationals will hold the conference there again at a later date.

Thanks a ton, Trish, for blogging about Nashville! You mentioned quite a few places I want to add to my list when we visit there next summer!

I can’t WAIT to read Winter’s Longing. Am adding the book to my wish list as I type.

Ohhh! I also wanted to mention that the Parthenon was a pretty big part of the Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief movie. I wasn’t sure if it was a real place or not until I read your blog. I’m definitely adding that to my list!

Thanks, everyone. I’m glad you all like the sound of the places I mentioned. I think many people think of Nashville only having country music stuff, but it has a lot more than that.

Tami, I haven’t seen Percy Jackson yet, but I’m pretty sure they’re dealing with the original Parthenon. I’ll have to settle for the replica. Smile

Hi Trish, thanks for the virtual tour of Nashville. It sounds like a great vacation spot. We passed through once on our way back to GA and saw a bit of Elvis’ mansion. It looked smaller than we expected.

Hey Trish! Nope, they actually have to travel to the Parthenon in Nashville to retrieve one of Persephone’s pearls. They have this whole fight scene with a 3 headed beast (the one where they cut off a head and two grow back). Pretty neat scene.

I highly recommend the movie if you get a chance to see it. I LOVED the books, but I don’t remember them having to stop in Nashville in the book….grin…

Thanks again for a great post!

Trish,

I happen to LOVE country music, so Nashville is my kind of town! My dh used to work for Crye-Leike Realtors so he visited Nashville quite often. I hope to visit again soon! Thanks for giving us the scoop on Nashville!
