Up Close and Personal with our Characters

Recently Annie Rayburn’s characters, Teriza and Paul, from her book Bittersweet Obsessions, got together with my (Susan Carlisle) characters Scott and Hannah from Heart Surgeon, Hero …Husband? to answer a few personal questions.  The answers were quite revealing.

Do you sleep in PJs or the buff?

Scott: PJ bottoms only.

Hannah: PJs, of course.

Teriza: I’m with Hannah. There are too many lingerie choices out there not to wear them. Besides, they make me feel even sexier.

Paul: Buff.

What’s your go-to breakfast?

Scott: Eggs and toast, must have something to stick to my ribs for all those long surgeries.

Hannah:  A bowl of cereal with some fruit.

Teriza: An omelet loaded with veggies and two cups of hot green tea.

Paul: Eggs, cheese grits and biscuits with sausage gravy, when I can get it. (Does a sideways glance at Teriza) But if I’m making it, a cheese and bacon sandwich.

Diet drink or full throttle?

Scott: The real stuff.

Hannah: Me too.

Teriza: (rubs her baby bump and pulls a face) Neither these days.

Paul: Full throttle, as long as it’s Dr. Pepper.

Steak and potatoes or chicken and rice for dinner?

Hannah: Oh, I can answer that for Scott. Steak and potatoes all the way.

Scott: nods.

Hannah: I’m more a rice and chicken person.

Paul: Either. I’m all over the occasional ribeye and fully loaded spud, but Teriza makes a mean chicken and rice casserole with white wine and cheese.

Teriza: (nods) It’s the only way I can have wine and Paul has a serious cheese addiction. Hey, I think I’ll make that tonight.

Favorite dessert?

Scott: Any flavor of gelato.

Hannah: Chocolate pie, warm with vanilla ice cream.

Paul: I like her style, but make mine Southern Pecan.

Teriza: Anything with cream cheese and cinnamon. I crave cinnamon.

One place in the world you would love to travel?

Scott: New Zealand. I would love to kayak their rivers. All that white water!

Hannah: I love the outdoors also, but Paris seems like a nice place to visit.

Scott: (reaches over and squeezes Hannah’s hand.) Maybe that would be a good place for a honeymoon.

Teriza: A Honeymoon. There’s an idea. (nudges Paul with her elbow)

Paul: We’ll get to it after the baby’s born.

Teriza: Just kidding. Our last few weeks in Switzerland was a great honeymoon.

Do you have a hobby?

Hannah: I love to sew. Especially cross-stitching.

Scott: Kayaking. But I love almost anything done outdoors.

Teriza: Cooking and developing new recipes. It relaxes me. Paul will probably say managing his financial portfolio, but he’s not fooling me. In a few weeks the baby will be here and we’ll split our time between Atlanta and his ranch in Texas.

Paul: That’d be nice. I enjoy horseback riding and working around animals.

Candle light dinner or a picnic?

Scott: Picnic

Hannah: Picnic

Paul: Either

Teriza: Same here. As long as it’s with Paul.

Just for the ladies: Do you like clean shaven or 5 o’clock shadow?

Hannah: 5 o’clock shadow looks super sexy on Scott, so I’m going with that. But then again he looks good clean shaven. Heck, Scott looks good anyway I get him.

Teriza: Hannah’s got the right idea, but I prefer clean shaven.

What is your favorite outfit your guy wears?

Hannah (blushing): Nothing.

Teriza: I love to see Paul the way I met him, in outdoorsy clothes. He looks so rugged and yummy and usually ends up naked anyway. (grins)

Turnabout is fair play. Okay guys, just for you: Favorite date?

Scott: Hannah in my bed.

Paul: Let’s just say an evening at home. We don’t always make it to the bed.

Favorite dog?

Scott: Labrador retriever

Paul: At my Texas ranch, I’ve got a blue heeler. Great dog. Not much to look at, but a she’s claimed me for nearly ten years.

Nice, everyone! Thanks. I think we still have a few minutes left for a few fan questions. Anyone?

I think you have it covered as far as questions go. Fun to read through thank you.

Marilyn Baron - February 3, 2012 - 6:17 am

Yes. Fun and very clever.

Sandra Elzie - February 3, 2012 - 7:49 am

Interesting insight into your characters. Kind of a behind the scenes peek. Thanks ladies, great job.

Susan - February 3, 2012 - 8:46 am

Mary, Marilyn, and Sandy,
I found it great fun to do. I was surprise by some of my characters answers. Even I laughed.

Tammy Schubert - February 3, 2012 - 8:53 am

Enjoyed the interview.

Nancy Northcott - February 3, 2012 - 11:08 am

Fun interview, y’all!

Linsey Lanier - February 3, 2012 - 11:13 am

Loved the interview. You are two very talented ladies. Here’s my question: How did you meet?

Carol Burnside / Annie Rayburn - February 3, 2012 - 1:24 pm

Thanks, ladies. Glad y’all are enjoying the interview. Grin

Carol Burnside / Annie Rayburn - February 3, 2012 - 1:28 pm

Linsey: How did you meet?

Teriza: We met at a clinic in Switzerland. I was there for treatment after meeting and losing my life-mate. Paul was tasked with bringing me some medication when I was rather angry. The anger had nothing to do with him, but I’m afraid I took my mood out on him a bit. To his credit, he gave back as good as he got and danged if I didn’t enjoy it and him.

Paul: She was great. All fire and bristle along with the beauty. How could I resist her?

Susan - February 3, 2012 - 1:35 pm

Hannah: We met when I was a nurse and Scott was in med school. We were friends but he messed that up (she cuts her eyes at Scott)when he left to do his fellowship.
without a word to me.

Scott: Yeah, but I was here when you needed me and Jake needed me. I’ll never leave either of you again.

Susan - February 3, 2012 - 1:36 pm

Nancy,
Thanks for stopping in.

Hildie McQueen - February 3, 2012 - 2:45 pm

I love character interviews! Great job! Razz

Susan - February 3, 2012 - 4:37 pm

Hildie,
I’ve not done one before but I found it to be great fun. I especially enjoyed the two couples sharing at the same time.

Maxine - February 3, 2012 - 5:55 pm

Ladies, that was great! I enjoyed the two couples getting together. Excellent idea – I agree, you two are very talented

Susan - February 3, 2012 - 6:10 pm

Thanks Maxine.

Tami Brothers - February 3, 2012 - 10:09 pm

LOVE these! I especially like to see what some of my favorite characters are up to after the book is complete. Smile

My question would be about the kids. I know both couples are either having a baby or already have one. How many kids do you think you would eventually like to end up with? Big or small families? Will you be “that” family with the stickers across the back window of your vehicle? And on that note, would the guys drive a mini van?

Thanks Susan and Annie! I really enjoyed the interview.

Tami Yes

Susan - February 3, 2012 - 10:37 pm

Hannah: I would love to have a house full of kids.
Scott: Me too but I think I’d have to go with a SUV instead of a mini-van.

Carol Burnside / Annie Rayburn - February 3, 2012 - 10:43 pm

Thanks, Hildie and Maxine!

Carol Burnside / Annie Rayburn - February 3, 2012 - 10:49 pm

Tami,those are great questions. Smile

Paul: I’ve got an extended cab full-size pickup. I’m sure I could fit at least 3 car seats in there, but if it comes down to the family not fitting in my truck, sure I’d drive a mini-van.

Teriza: I hope you don’t think that’s a possibility.

Paul: I’m just sayin’…if.

Teriza: Let’s just get this first one here before we make plans to fill up your truck.

Paul: I guess planning more kids when your wife is in her last trimester isn’t such a great idea. I’m shutting up now and going to rub my darling’s swollen feet.

Teriza: Now you’re talking. Come here, handsome. Put those talented fingers to work.
