What an awesome experience. Great idea about the taxi driver - on your time not someone elses. It all sounds so wonderful. Hubby and I are talking about going next year. I'd love to talk to you about what to do and not to do.

Hi Carol,
I know just what you mean about the Vatican museum. We each had a camera and took a couple of hundred pictures...each. Even with the private tour guide not rushing us, I'm sure we could have spent another couple of hours in there if we hadn't gotten so tired from walking.

Note to anyone planning a trip over there....I read just last week that the Vatican is no longer taking credit cards. You have to have Euros.

BTW, what a neat anniversary trip...one of a lifetime.

Ah, Sandy, your tales of Rome brought back memories of Hubby and my 2010 anniversary trip. Fun times. (sigh!) It's a good thing we don't use real film anymore because after our stroll through the vatican museum, my backpack would've been too heavy to carry.

Hi BJ,
Good to hear from you! Yes, I understand how a surfer guy from California would love Hawaii...after six trips there I'd leave tomorrow for another visit.

As to flying to Europe again? Well......I'd have to think long and hard about that one. The people in the shops seemed to only be interested in our money and otherwise they weren't all that friendly. Well, except in the Malina glass shop. Those ladies were fantastic.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment.

Hildie,
Rome is a fascinating city. Even as we were touring, there seemed to be some type of disturbance up ahead and our guide muttered an "Uh-oh." and jerked the wheel to turn down an alley and avoid it. We asked what was going on but he gave us a very vague answer. We heard later that there was a demonstration but that the police had gotten it in hand quickly. Our beautiful world is having a lot of unrest...even in the seemingly peaceful countries. But we enjoyed every minute of our time there.

Hi Anna,
Yep...we had a LOT of sticker-shock moments. (I know I keep harping on that $6.00 bottle of Coke, but....) There was a shop on Malina where they sell hand-blown glass...Malina Glass...and there was this vase...well, I just couldn't justify that much money even though it was absolutely beautiful. Instead, I bought several little Christmas ornaments at 10 Euros each....$16.00 American.

Cairo had been on the schedule...including a camel ride out into the dessert to a pyramid, but the unrest took care of that.

Maxine,
You're right about spending time in Rome & not being able to see enough. Besides, there's so much to see outside the city that we didn't have any time to venture out to. I think you'd need to spend a few months...and maybe live with a family so you could see the real Italy.
