I started a book club. After four of my friends and I read the book “Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons“, by Lorna Landvik we decided to follow in the footsteps of the women in the book and start a book club.
Now at about twenty five members, the book club (Sweet Tea & Chocolate Cake ) will be celebrating it’s tenth anniversary next April.
Why a book club? Well, why not? Reading is a solitary hobby so when there’s an opportunity to be around other readers it’s great fun. The energy in our book club when discussing a book is tangible. It always amazes me how many different perspectives each person comes away with after reading the same story.
If you are a reader, I strongly recommend you form or join a club because there are many rewards to belonging to a book club. First of all exposure to books you would otherwise never read. Discussing and sharing the love of literacy. Of course it’s fun to meet and get to know new people in the area. Some of our book club members have become close friends after meeting in the book club. Over the years the club has evolved and changed, the books spanning from romance to mystery to fantasy. We only read fiction.
If you are considering starting your own club, here are a few pointers.
How to start a book club:
Start small, invite three or four readers to join you
Meet regularly (we meet once a month)
Allow each member to choose a book and location of where to meet (You can narrow the genre down to a specific, like contemporary romance or mystery to make it easier)
Develop a routine. (We arrive, chat, order food. Discuss questions and announce the book for the following month then do a drawing for a prize)
It’s good to have some rules, such as promptness and that the person choosing a book be prepared. But what the members of my book club love is one rule we have always maintained. You do not have to read the book to attend. No pressure makes for happy book club members.
What about you? Do you belong to a Book Club? Are you considering starting one?
