In the past ten years I’ve only watched two TV series, Grey’s Anatomy (the first season) and Scandals (four episodes of the first season).
Because I work fulltime, I’ve made sacrifices to have the time to write. Watching television is my sacrifice, so I’m very selective in what I view. This season, I’ve been intrigued by Sleepy Hollow.
For those of you who haven’t heard of the new show, Sleepy Hollow is a reimaging of Washington Irvine’s short story of the same name. In this 2013 retelling, Ichabod Crane is a British history professor who works as a spy for General George Washington during the American Revolution. He beheads a masked horseman during a battle but is mortally wounded in the process. His wife, a witch, casts a spell that puts him into an eternal sleep. He awakens in 21st century Sleepy Hollow. But the headless horseman, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, also awakens and begins a trail of death across the city.
Only one person believes Ichabod’s tale of the headless rider and that person is Lt. Abbie Mills.
As only television can do it, Ichabod is hot, not the tall, lanky, big adams-appled portrait of Crane that we’ve seen many times.
There’s a great chemistry between Ichabod Crane and Lt. Mills. He’s a man out of time and she’s a woman with horrors in her past. Ichabod’s wife has been imprisoned in a different realm and comes to him in visions. I think a possible love triangle will develop. The series has humor, great special effects, and history. The biggest plus, it’s filling my well of creativity.
Have you seen the show? What do you think? Does it have staying power? If you haven’t seen it, what shows in the new season pique your interest?
