My First Book Signing

by Maxine Davis

Recently I attended two book signings and, to be honest, I couldn’t wait to have one myself.  Well, I got my wish on March 20.

Let me explain how it happened.  The Monroe County Reporter had an article inviting all Monroe County authors to come to its first annual Author’s Night at the library.  Authors were asked to bring their books, meet everyone, and sign and sell books.

I took a copy of Seasons and Seashells to the branch manager.  We talked, and it was a done deal.  I was on the list to appear.  I know it was for a short story, but no one seemed to mind.

I had an absolute ball!  I called my artist friend, and she said, “Stage the table.”  I also tried on outfits for a week.   It wasn’t for a New York Times best-seller, but it didn’t matter.   I was hyped!

Eight authors showed up and a few people, mainly from the town of Forsyth.  I was the only romance writer.  I did sell three books to total strangers.  I resisted the urge to reach across the table and hug them.

I am nearing my deadline of having some more books “out there,” and when I do, you can bet I will have another book signing!

That’s awesome, Maxine. I’m glad you had the experience so it will goad you to write more and publish more and have more book signings. Whoo-hoo!!!

That is so exciting. And there’s nothing wrong with a short story. Some of the most famous authors wrote in that genre. I loved the way you staged the table and I can identify with the phrase where you hugged the people who bought your book. It is so thrilling. I applaud the newspaper for doing that. Can’t wait to hear about your next signing.

Hi Carol, Thanks. I sure needed a kick to jumpstart me and stop rewriting everything!

Maxine Davis - March 27, 2014 - 9:31 am

Marilyn, Thanks for commenting. Your book signing was fabulous, and I knew I wanted to “be like you.” Maybe one day!

I had a similar experience, Maxine, except it was with two of my friends. I signed “Seasons and Seashells” at my dining room table, LOL! But I hope someday to sign a book of my very own. We just have to keep believing!

Maxine,

Congrats on your first book signing. That must have been an amazing experience. The closest I’ve come to it is that my mother bought twn copies, asked me to sign them, and then passed them out at Christmas presents.

Maxine Davis - March 27, 2014 - 11:04 am

Pam, It is fun to sign anywhere! Yes, we will be signing someday – I do believe it!

Maxine Davis - March 27, 2014 - 11:06 am

Thanks, Walt. It was so much fun. It is absolutely fun to sign for family, too! Your mother sounds smart! She is so proud of her son!

So brave of you to have a book signing. The ones I’ve attended are all-out events. They’ve become so much more than just signing a book. People want pictures, they want to talk to you, and hold their baby! I’m kind of shy, so I would have to work on that kind of engagement.

Maxine Davis - March 27, 2014 - 3:13 pm

Piper, it is so much fun, you don’t even think of what’s going on. This is a small group, however. It was the first time the library had an author gathering to sign and sell. You can do it! If you can put a book out there, you can sign it! Just try to relax and enjoy. Good luck to you and thanks for commenting!

Oh Maxine!!! I am soooooo thrilled for you! I wish I had been able to make it. You look amazing and the table is perfect.

Definitely going to have to do it again. SOON!

Hugs!

Tami
