Three years ago, Denny Cutler broke Becca Timm’s heart when he re-enlisted in the Marines and ended their relationship before shipping out for Afghanistan. Reeling from the death of his mother, Denny convinced himself he was doing what was best for Becca, who was still in college. By the time he came home two years later, he had realized his error but it was too late. Becca had moved on…or so she said. Denny left San Diego and settled in Virgin River, a small mountain community in the northern California mountains. In the past year, he’s put down roots, found a job that fulfills him and made good friends he considers his extended family. But he hasn’t forgotten the girl he let get away.

Becca Timm is at a crossroads. The private school where she’s been teaching has been closed and the wealthy law student she’s been dating for the past year is talking about engagement rings. As Christmas approaches, there are major life decisions to be made but Becca can’t seem to take that final step forward. She may have told everyone that she’s over Denny but the truth is she still has feelings for him. She decides that the only way to put those feelings firmly in the past is to tag along with her twin brother (Denny’s friend and fellow ex-Marine) to their “guy’s week” of fishing and hunting in the “backwoods” town of Virgin River, see Denny and confirm that she made the right decision in not giving him a second chance.

At first, that’s exactly the conclusion she reaches. She and Denny can’t seem to be in the same room without arguing and she can’t believe he’s made the decision to spend his life in what she considers a hick town in the middle of nowhere. She’s sure she could never leave her beloved beach and all the city has to offer. But when Becca injures her ankle, forcing her to stay in Virgin River beyond the planned week, things begin to change. She begins to realize how much Denny has grown up in the past three years and remembers why she once hoped to spend her life with this man. And, as she comes to know the people of Virgin River, she begins to wonder if perhaps she’s been looking for her happiness in the wrong place. Only time will tell if the magic of a Virgin River Christmas will open her eyes to the man, and town, that are perfect for this city girl.

Bring Me Home for Christmas is another heartwarming tale from Robyn Carr’s Virgin River. While I’ve enjoyed some of the books in this long-running series more than others, I never tire of visiting with the warm-hearted people of Virgin River and the surrounding area and am already looking forward to returning December 27th for Hidden Summit.

If you’re looking for a heartwarming, small town, second chance romance to put you in the holiday spirit, I recommend curling up with a copy of Bring Me Home for Christmas.

ISBN-13: 978-0425244487

Release Date: November 1, 2011

In her third Harmony novel, Jodi Thomas pieces together the stories of characters encountered in the earlier novels and adds the stories of new characters like a master art quilter stitching together varying shapes and colors to create a picture of this Texas town and its people.

Funeral director Tyler Wright has high hopes that Major Kate Cummings, the army arson expert who has moved in and out of his life, is finally ready for their relationship to move beyond friendship. Twenty-year-old Regan Truman is forced to accept that her Uncle Jeremiah, the man who first saw value in her and gave her a home and a family, is dying. As if that weren’t heartbreak enough, her best friend (who could be more) Noah McAllen is still risking limb and life on the rodeo circuit and seems to have lost his dreams and his resilience along the way. Noah loves Regan, but his self-doubt is a barrier between them. “She was the mirror of all he could be, held up to show him how little he’d made of himself.” Meanwhile, former bad boy Brandon Biggs is a Harmony firefighter now and still has his eye on Regan.

Liz Matheson Leary is about to give birth to twins, and her husband Gabe is terrified, feeling totally unprepared for the “alien invasion.” The career of Liz’s sister Claire is flourishing. Her paintings of men barbecued over an open fire and hanged from the Empire State Building by a rope of ugly ties are selling for $20-30 thousand. Her affair with Gabe’s friend Denver Sims is flourishing too—in hotel rooms around the country, hidden away from family and friends in Harmony.

Ronelle Logan, a lonely twenty-seven-year-old so isolated that she feels as if “in all of her life she’s never met someone of her species” delivers a package to the home of newcomer Marin Winslow, a man almost as lonely as she. He makes her feel visible, the two connect, and Ronelle’s life is changed forever. Autumn Smith, pregnant and homeless, becomes one more wanderer who finds a home and friends in Harmony.

When a tornado hits the town, it twists more than trees and homes. Crises bring changes that leave some questions answered for and others to echo long after the storm has passed.

Although there are several love stories in The Comforts of Home, even one with a most atypical hero who earns an HEA, this novel is not romance. It’s not conventional women’s fiction either. It reminds me more of a good TV dramedy series with a cast of quirky characters with whom viewers fall in love and a place that feels as familiar as the small town they know best. I see Jason Alexander as Tyler Wright.

Thomas is a superb storyteller, whatever she writes, and her Harmony books are among her best work. If you’re a fan of small-town settings, heartwarming tales, and out-of-the-ordinary characters, you don’t want to miss this book. Book 4, Just Down the Road, is scheduled to be released April 3, 2012. I can’t wait. I’m hoping to learn more about Ronelle and Marty, and, of course, I want a happy ending for Regan and Noah. In the meantime, I plan to reread Welcome to Harmony, Somewhere Along the Way, and The Comforts of Home.

Criminal Investigations Division agent Kelly McQueen is called to investigate the death of a solider during a live ammunition training exercise on the local Army base. The officer over the training exercise, Captain Phil Thibodeaux, is certain there must have been a lapse in the safety check during the exercise. But Agent McQueen has a gut feeling that something went wrong, terribly wrong, and she is pretty sure it wasn’t an accident.

Upon meeting Agent McQueen, Captain Thibodeaux wonders if she is the right person for the job. While her no-nonsense approach and business-only manners may work in some investigations, this particular one involves the loss of one of Captain Thibodeaux’s own men. So it not just business, it’s personal. Captain Thibodeaux has had enough of business-minded women, beginning with his career-driven mother who didn’t care for the little boy she left at home during those long days as the office.

Agent McQueen has spent her career in the military dealing with soldiers and officers full of male attitude. Add to that feelings of abandonment and bitterness towards her nearly non-existent, deadbeat father and you can see why Kelly is all about her work. She knows she can only count on herself.

As the puzzle pieces of the investigation begin to fall in place, the close working relationship between Captain Thibodeaux and Agent McQueen grows more personal and feelings slowly arise to the surface. Both are unsure how to acknowledge the bud of love blooming, but when danger encircles Agent McQueen and evil suspects come to light, they both realize they need to lean on each other and on God.

This is a wonderful romantic suspense! And though there is intrigue and evil throughout the story, it is also filled with sweet moments between the hero and heroine. While Ms. Giusti keeps you guessing the identity of the murderer, she generously sprinkles the novel with touches of faith that adds richness to the story.

Lord Cameron Mackenzie loves nothing better than spending his days with the horses he trains…and his nights with the women he seduces. As much as he enjoys women, he finds that the horses give him much less trouble—but that doesn’t mean he’s giving up women, difficult or no. During a house party at his brother Hart’s estate, Cam is well on his way to a satisfactory interlude with the very cooperative Phyllida Chase when he hears a noise near the window in his room. Imagine his surprise when he pulls back the curtains and finds Ainsley Douglas staring back at him with her large, gray eyes. Why is this troublesome, but attractive widow skulking about in his bedchamber…again. He wonders if her excuse now will be better than the one she had six years ago.

Ainsley Douglas cannot believe she has been caught rifling through Cameron Mackenzie’s room…and by the man himself, no less. She is just trying to recover letters that belong to Queen Victoria that could be extremely embarrassing. Phyllida Chase has stolen the letters, and Ainsley is certain that she has hidden them in Cam’s room, her latest lover. Naturally, these two would come in the room while Ainsley is trying to find the letters, to no avail. But Ainsley is found out—although Cam does not let Phyllida know—and Cam refuses to let her leave his room until she tells him why she’s looking for the letter. And the price she has to pay does not involve money, but it may inevitably cost her her heart.

He was rude, ungentlemanly, brutish, and dangerous. Lord Cameron collected erotica, people told her, books and art. She saw no sign of that lying about, although the painting that hung over the bedside table—a woman sitting on her bed pulling on her stockings—held unashamed sensuality.

But though a lady ought to regard Lord Cameron in disapproval, even apprehension, he made Ainsley’s blood tingle. He again was awakening things in her that had lain dead for too many years.

Is there anything more delicious than a rake just begging to be tamed by the right woman? Well, Cam Mackenzie is all that and more. He is scarred physically and emotionally—his marriage with his late wife was an abusive one in more ways than one (she abused him)—so he has closed himself off, not opening his heart to another woman, not risking having it broken. Yes, he is my favorite kind of hero, and Ainsley is just the woman to break through Cam’s self-imposed barriers and heal him with her love. Ainsley has suffered her own heartbreak, albeit in a different way. And although her attraction to Cam knows no bounds, she is afraid to fall in love with him, because he has made it clear to one and all that marriage is not something he ever wants to try again. But then Cam met Ainsley and suddenly love and marriage didn’t seem so impossible after all.

Cameron turned her around and kissed her again, this kiss lingering and slow. “You’re a beautiful, beautiful woman, Ainsley Douglas. And I want to drink you down.”

With lines like that, is it any wonder that I was fanning myself?! I’ve been mad for the Mackenzie men since I read The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, which is still one of my favorite books, ever. They are bold, sexy, honorable men—my favorite kind—and Cam won my heart just as thoroughly as the rest of the bunch. He hides his pain behind his cavalier attitude, but it was palpable, and it made my heart ache for all that he had been through. The love between Cam and Ainsley is a thing of beauty and the passion between them….whoa! I’m surprised I didn’t spontaneously combust while I was reading this book.
The Many Sins of Lord Cameron is the third book in the Highland Pleasures series. It’s not completely necessary to read the series in order, but the first two books were so delicious, I would recommend savoring the series…and all of those manly Mackenzies. So, the order is: The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage, and The Many Sins of Lord Cameron. Fans of this series, stay tuned. The next book, TheDuke’s Perfect Wife (Hart’s story), will be released next year.
I really cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you haven’t met the Mackenzies, you don’t know what you’re missing.

~ Gannon

Sports agent Elizabeth Darnell is fully aware that she works in a male-dominated industry, but doesn’t let that deter her from being exceptional at what she does. So when she messed with her biggest client’s (Mick Riley from The Perfect Play) love life, Liz knows that she screwed up, and she paid the ultimate price—she lost an important client and dear friend. She naturally assumes that Mick’s brother Gavin (who is a star Major League Baseball player and also her client) will follow in Mick’s footsteps and fire her as well. Since the “incident”, Liz has done her best to avoid Gavin so he can’t do just that. When Gavin corners her at a team party and says he needs to talk to her, she thinks this is it. He drives them to his beach house to talk and Liz is surprised when he doesn’t fire her—he just wants to know why she’s been avoiding him. Even when he gives her a seductive look, she simply can’t tell him the truth.

She always kept her distance from him, usually met him in crowds and at public events where she’d be safe.

And she had a damn good reason for it.

One, she was four years older than him. She didn’t date younger guys. Ever.

Two, she was in love with him and had been for years.

Three, he was totally, utterly, and completely oblivious to it, and she intended to keep it that way.

Gavin knows that Liz made a huge mistake, but she apologized and made up for it so he’s good with it. Her detachment prompted him to look at her in a different light and he can’t stop thinking about her. When their “talk” leads to a blazing hot night of sex, Gavin wants more. He asks Liz to stay at his place through spring training and she agrees. During this time, he gets to know the real Liz underneath the cold-hearted façade she shows most people. Liz begins to wonder if she and Gavin can keep their professional and personal relationship separate. Or do they have to?

I really enjoyed Changing the Game! Liz was the “villain” who made a huge mistake in the previous book and while she did make amends, I was super curious how Jaci Burton would handle her as a heroine. Well, she certainly convinced me. I came to care for Liz every bit as much as Gavin. And I can totally see why she’s held a torch for Gavin for years when he says things like:

“Honey, I am that good. I know what you want, and I can give it to you. Anytime you want it. Anytime I want it. That’s why you want to be here with me.”

Yes, Gavin is that good. He’s a macho alpha who takes on a woman who likes to be in control all the time. This of course led to some serious sparks between the two. And even though he did something that made me want to strangle him, I chocked it up to him being a man…and he more than made up for it. *g* I love this series because even though they are erotic romance, they’re more than just sex. These stories are full of heart and real, multi-layered characters that I truly care about. I just adore the whole Riley family. After reading the excerpt in the back of this one, I am extremely eager for their sister Jenna’s story, Taking a Shot, coming in February of 2012. Until then, I definitely recommend both The Perfect Play and Changing the Game!

J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series has often been referred to as “book crack” and for good reason. In Lover Unleashed, book 9 of the series, Payne, twin sister of Vishous, meets the man destined to be her mate. After finally having escaped her mother, The Scribe Virgin, Payne is paralyzed in an accident, and there is only one person who can heal her: Dr. Manuel Manello, Jane’s (Vishous’ mate) former boss.

Manny has mourned Jane’s death for the past year, so when she appears asking for his help, to say he’s stunned is a massive understatement. But stunned is exactly the right word when he sees Payne for the first time, and all he can think and feel is “Mine.” When Manny discovers that Payne is a vampire, his feelings for her don’t change, but he’s almost certain they have no real future together. They say that love conquers all, but does that mean that a human and a vampire can find their happily-ever-after?

My Black Dagger Brotherhood addiction continues to be fed with each book in this series. Some books I love more than others, and while I enjoyed Lover Unleashed, it left some unanswered questions and introduced some new characters and side stories that left me hanging. Which, of course, means I’ll continue reading this series to find out what happens next. J.R. Ward’s writing style and incredible world building is unparalleled!

For three months Aidan has had Emma under twenty-four hour surveillance and knows practically everything about her and her habits. But the more he discovers, the more Aidan is convinced that Emma has had no contact with any werewolves; she’s just a gifted writer with vivid imagination.

Vicki Lewis Thompson has long been an auto buy author for me. Her books are filled with humor, passion, and colorful characters, and A Werewolf In Manhattan is another keeper. This is not just another werewolf romance—I love Ms. Thompson’s unique spin on the werewolf myth. Aidan is most definitely an alpha (not just when’s he’s a wolf), and he is all kinds of sexy. Gorgeous, loyal, loving, and richer than Croesus…what’s not to love, right? Watching Emma see her fantasy come to life right before her eyes is incredibly entertaining. Haven’t we all imagined just such a thing? I know I certainly have. If you’re looking for a fun, lighthearted romance with plenty of sizzle to turn up the heat on these cold winter nights, this one’s for you.

Publisher: Harlequin SuperRomance

Release Date: November 6, 2007

ISBN-10: 037371453X

Marley Pierce has spent the last five years putting her life back together after it was torn to pieces by Beau Buchanan, a cocky bad boy she met while visiting her grandmother. In two short weeks, Beau seduced and abandoned the sheltered, naive Marley, leaving her to return home to her small town to face pregnancy, disgrace and tragic consequences for both her and her family. She’s older now, wiser, and has worked hard to build her landscape design business and rebuild her good reputation, yet her relationship with her parents, especially her mother, still suffers. She’s shocked and furious when Beau shows up in her small town to work at a housing development where she’s doing the landscaping, especially when he doesn’t even remember who she is. She vows to have nothing to do with him but can’t help but be drawn to him once again, especially when she learns where he’s been and what happened to him. And, the more she’s around him, the more she likes him. He seems so different than before: kinder, more thoughtful, more genuine. But she’s torn between wanting to spend time with him and needing to send him away because he tore her life apart once and she’s terrified he’ll do it again.

Regaining consciousness in a military hospital in Germany, Beau Buchanan has no memories of the bomb that injured him, no memories of the man sitting by his bedside waiting to take him home and no memories of Beau Buchanan. His mind is a terrifyingly clean slate. When he encounters Marley while working at a job site with his father, he’s immediately drawn to her and shocked that she seems to hate him. He still remembers nothing of his past and struggles to come to terms with the terrible things that she says he did to her while, at the same time, struggling to heal and to remember. He wants a second chance with her, a chance to prove that he’s a changed man and would never treat her badly. But, as the two grow closer, Beau begins to have flashes of memories, memories that make no sense, until he begins to question if he’s really a changed man…or a different man.

A Christmas To Remember was my introduction to the writing of Kay Stockham and vaulted her straight to my auto-buy list. Her books are deeply emotional and thought provoking, frequently centered around complex family dynamics and always, always touch my heart. Like a well choreographed dance, they never miss a beat.

This is the sequel to an earlier book of Stockham’s but stands well on its own. If you’re like me though, you’ll be intrigued by an important secondary character named Joe who keeps appearing in the memory flashes and will want to read his story in Man With a Past:Going Back, Harlequin SuperRomance #1347 (May 9, 2006).

Lady Siusan Sinclair and her brothers and sisters are known as the Seven Deadly Sins, creating gossip wherever they go. Siusan embodies the sin of sloth, relishing the fact that, as the daughter of a duke, she doesn’t have to work for her money. But ever since her father issued an ultimatum to all of the Sinclair siblings to make something of themselves or be completely cut off, Siusan’s life hasn’t been as carefree. On the first anniversary of her fiance’s death, Siusan is attending a ball to introduce the Duke of Exeter. Still grieving, she wants nothing more than to escape the crush of society and allow her tears to flow in private. Siusan manages to sneak away from the noise and heat of the crowd, closing herself in the dark and blessedly quiet library. But her solitude is soon interrupted when a stranger enters.

Sebastian Beaufort, the Duke of Exeter, never wanted to be duke, but his brother’s untimely death thrust him into a position of responsibility and notoriety he could barely tolerate. He knew it was up to him to redeem his family’s tarnished name, but tonight he sought to numb himself with brandy….and time with a highpriced whore. Sebastian opens the door of the library and in the shaft of moonlight sees the woman he thinks he has paid for. Sebastian has what he considers the most passionate encounter of his life with a woman whose face he cannot see, but whose body he cannot forget.

Siusan sought solace in the arms of this stranger, figuring that this one night of sin won’t hurt anyone, because she will never tell. Her plan goes awry, however, when she discovers that her mystery lover is none other than the Duke of Exeter! Siusan flees the library before he can see her face clearly, and she and her siblings quickly exit the ball. Knowing her father will disown her if he ever discovers this scandal, Siusan leaves London for Bath, becoming a teacher—known as Miss Bonnet— at Mrs. Huddleston’s School of Virtues. Never having worked a day in her life, Siusan doesn’t know the first thing about being a teacher, but she does know how to act like a proper lady. So she decides to instruct her charges in how to be a proper lady. She finds it hard to maintain her proper demeanor when the handsome guardian of one of her students begins spending an inordinate amount of time at school. When Siusan discovers he is the Duke of Exeter, she wonders how long she can keep her identity a secret.

Siusan and Sebastian have a long road on the way to their happily-ever-after, and it is filled with countless twists and turns and even a few potholes. But it makes their happy ending that much more satisfying and well-deserved at the end. Sebastian is a reluctant duke, believing his family is full of flaws and at times, maybe even cursed. Siusan has lost much in her life: her mother, her fiance, and the respect and approval of her father. Is it any wonder she feels unworthy of love?

She had tasted true love, and yet because of her past, because of her sinful ways, she could never live the life her heart begged of her.

She had ruined everything. She wrapped her arms around herself and began to rock.

She was too flawed, not worthy of being loved by anyone. She had proved this again and again to herself and to all of Society. And soon, Sebastian would realize it, too.

Siusan finds love with Sebastian, but she also finds purpose and fulfillment as a teacher, and I found that so satisfying. Who doesn’t want to find love with the man of their dreams and also find their purpose in life? The Duke’s Night of Sin is another winner in Ms. Caskie’s Seven Deadly Sins series. The Sinclairs are entertaining in the extreme, and there is never a dull moment when they’re around! This is the third book, but if you have never read the first two, you will not be lost if you start with this one. Once you meet the Sinclair siblings, though, I’m sure you’ll want to start from the beginning. There are plenty of “sins” to go around. Enjoy!

The Princess in His Bed is the second installment in the Fiery Tales collection by Lila DiPasqua and includes three stories. As I stated in my review of Awakened by a Kiss, the first installment in the Fiery Tales collection, Lila has taken the classic fairy tales of your childhood and transformed those beloved tales into sensual stories the adult woman in you will find satisfying and refreshing. And as much as I enjoyed Awakened by a Kiss, this installment is even better! Yes, these Fiery Tales just keep getting better and better.

The Marquis’s New Clothes. Thanks to the carelessness of her cousin who has lost a valuable jeweled ring, widow Aimee de Miran must now cozy up to a known libertine in order to locate the ring. Though the Marquis de Nattes is one of the most seductive men at court, Aimee detests the very thought of him. Adam de Vey is as beautiful as sin and a master at seduction, but is completely faithless. Just like her late husband. But Aimee’s love for her cousin is stronger than her dislike of Adam, so she bites her tongue and proceeds to show interest in him. Adam de Vey is shocked when his late friend’s wife shows him the slightest bit of interest. He has loved and adored Aimee from afar for many years. Now that she is interested, Adam begins to show her that the pleasures in the bedroom can (and should) be shared by both parties involved. As the two share days and nights together, their bonds of passion soon multiply to genuine feelings of love and happiness.

“Destiny may have caused their paths to cross that summer.

But it was their love that made their tale romantic, repeated through the realm.

And ensured their happily ever after.”

The Lovely Duckling. Burned badly as a baby and driven into seclusion by taunts and ridicule ten years ago, spinster Emile de Sarron has decided her aunt’s week long masquerade, which is known for its decadent diversions, is the perfect place for her to experience passion for the very first time. As everyone attending will be wearing a mask, no one will know she is even there. Well, no one but Vincent d’Alumbert, the man she has been corresponding with for several months and the only man she told she would be attending. Thankful for the companionship and their frank discussions of passion, though only by letters, Emile is anxious to finally see Vincent. Joseph d’Alumbert cannot believe that Emile has arrived at the Comtesse de Saint-Arnaud’s country estate for a week of debauchery. Ten years ago, Joseph attended a party where several men taunted Emile about her burns and thus her unmarriageable status. Driven by the need to see how she has being doing, Joseph began writing to Emile several months ago. But he signed all of the letters in his twin brother’s name – Vincent. Enjoying the correspondence between each other, Joseph has slowly fallen for Emile. And this week of masked debauchery is just the time to show Emile that she is a woman full of passion and one he desires, even with her scars.

“Facing him were her scars, covering her back, and down the backs of her arms to her elbows. Pink to dark red blotchy skin. Thick. And raised. And uneven. And horrible to behold.

Not having the courage to turn back around to see his reaction, she waited for him to speak, her insides quivering.

She felt his lips against her shoulder first. She lurched. He slipped his arm around her waist and bent her forward, her palms bracing against the mattress. Kiss after kiss was pressed against her back as he slowly made his way down her spine. Tears welled in her eyes and fell onto the bed. She was stunned, so moved, she couldn’t believe what he was doing.

He straightened, leaned over her, and near her ear he repeated, “I just see beauty.”

The Princess and the Diamonds. Mathias Paul Thomas de Tesson, Marquis de Montfort, has volunteered with the King’s Police of Paris to infiltrate an illegal gaming center and report the members of the aristocracy who are playing the forbidden card game, Basset. While attending the first masked card game, Mathias is immediately intrigued by a young man who bets with loose diamonds and leaves immediately after winning a large sum. Running after the young man, Mathias pulls the mask away and finds the face of a beautiful young woman. Princess Gabrielle is determined to use the royal diamonds as funds for gambling in order to win back the money her younger half-brother recently lost in a Basset game. Disguised as a man, Gabrielle’s plan seems to be working well when she wins a large sum the first night of gambling. But her sense of accomplishment quickly changes when a handsome man pulls away her mask. When Mathias assumes she is her uncle’s mistress, Gabrielle does not correct this misconception. Mathias makes advances and Gabrielle finds the attention exhilarating and utterly satisfying. Once again passion pulls the emotion of love to surface. The daughter of a king usually does not marry for love but for political gain, but Gabrielle’s gamble pays off big time. Actually it pays off for a life time.

“Princess of my heart. Princess that I love. The only Princess for me.”

“And will you ride off with her, taking her from this palace, and bring her to your castle?”

“Indeed.” He brought her hand and placed it over his heart. “I will bring her to my kingdom, the one we create with our very own magic, where I shall cherish and love her – ever after.”

A promise Mathias sealed with a searing kiss.

Once again Lila DiPasqua has blown me away with her writing. Not only are these three stories heartwarming and touching, but Lila thoroughly sprinkles each one with the spice of passion.

If you only buy one book this week or this month, do yourself a favor and BUY this book! Lila DiPasqua has proven once again that satisfaction is guaranteed with her spicy, yet touching writing. Well done, Lila. WELL DONE!
